Overview

Ryan is a member of the Constangy Cyber Team and is based in Seattle, Washington. As a member of our compliance advisory team, Ryan offers comprehensive compliance advisory services to clients, helping them proactively navigate the legal landscape of data privacy and cybersecurity. He guides organizations in understanding and adhering to a broad spectrum of privacy regulations, including state, federal, and international laws. With a practical business approach, Ryan assists clients in implementing comprehensive data protection strategies that minimize legal risks and support business operational objectives.

Before joining Constangy, Ryan served eight years at Grant Thornton, one of the largest audit, assurance and advisory firms in the U.S., with a substantial international presence. Ryan was a founding member of Grant Thornton’s Cyber Practice and served as Senior Manager of the Privacy & Data Protection team. During his tenure at Grant Thornton, Ryan provided comprehensive risk advisory services to an array of clients, including several of the world’s largest multinationals, Fortune 500 companies, buy-side M&A organizations, and smaller pre-IPO start-ups. Ryan led assessments for compliance with domestic and international regulations, developed regulatory change management processes, designed privacy and information governance programs, and led multiple privacy risk and privacy impact assessment programs. In addition to traditional advisory services, Ryan also designed program metrics and industry benchmarking analyses, supported technology selection and integration, and has led strategic initiatives for implementing emerging technologies. Prior to Grant Thornton, Ryan served with Under Armour Legal’s Connected Fitness and Digital team supporting the company’s privacy compliance and risk management for apps, wearables, and e-commerce.  

Ryan is an Adjunct Professor at Seattle University, teaching courses on “Global Privacy and Business” at the School of Law and “Data Science, Law, and Ethics” at the College of Science and Engineering. Ryan earned a dual Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration at the University of Maryland’s Carey School of Law and Smith School of Business, during which he served as Associate Editor of The Journal of Business & Technology Law and published an article on software-related patents. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University. He is licensed to practice in Maryland. He also holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional for European laws (CIPP/E) credential from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
