At the end of the 2023 legislative session, the legislature made significant changes to the state’s public sector labor laws and their application to unions representing public sector employees. These legislative changes will not only force unions to modify several of their long-standing operational, membership, and record keeping practices, but they will also impact the way public sector employers interact with their unionized employees.
Among other significant changes, unions that are the certified bargaining agents for bargaining units that do not consist of law enforcement officers, correctional officers, or firefighters, will no longer be permitted to have their members’ dues and uniform assessments deducted and collected by the governmental employer. The law, set to take effect on July 1, 2023, also requires public sector unions to meet rigorous certification and financial disclosure requirements.
